The ISO 17024 revision process is well underway following a highly productive ISO/CASCO WG30 meeting held in Geneva from 18th to 20th July 2023. A dynamic group of around 30 international experts, with an additional 10 joining remotely, convened to discuss critical aspects of competence certification. This diverse panel represented certification and accreditation bodies from five continents, making it a truly global effort.

Key Focus Areas Explored:

During the meeting, the participants engaged in extensive discussions centered around the evolving landscape of competence certification. The key topics that took center stage included:

  1. Leveraging AI in Certification Processes: The potential of artificial intelligence in streamlining certification procedures, encompassing question drafting, essay writing, proctoring, exam marking, and certification algorithms, was a prominent topic of exploration.
  2. Harmonizing AI with Human Decision-Making: A vital aspect discussed was the integration of AI-supported processes with human judgment, ensuring a fair and accurate evaluation of candidates.
  3. Redefining Certification Metrics: The emphasis shifted from a mere assessment of knowledge to a more comprehensive evaluation of demonstrated competence and practical proficiency.
  4. Dynamic Validity Conditions: A novel idea was to consider replacing traditional certificate expiry dates with flexible validity conditions, monitored continuously to maintain relevance.
  5. Ensuring Certified Competence: The responsibility of certification bodies in verifying and upholding the certified competence of individuals was thoroughly examined.
  6. Collaboration Among Scheme Owners: The pivotal role of scheme owners in fostering collaborative efforts to enhance certification processes was discussed.
  7. Digital Open Badges: An innovative approach under consideration was the adoption of digital open badges as a viable alternative to conventional certificates.

The Path Ahead:

The positive momentum continues as the ISO 17024 revision process gains momentum. The next pivotal meeting is planned for Geneva towards the end of November 2023. While there is no undue pressure, the objective is to potentially advance to the committee draft (CD) stage and initiate the ballot process.
